The thyroid cartilage, the largest and most noticeable cartilage of the larynx, protrudes forward, forming what’s usually called the Adam’s apple. If you put your fingers on your throat and hum, you should feel the vibrations of your vocal cords under your fingers. During adolescence, this thyroid cartilage enlarges in males and is considered one of the secondary sex characteristics, along with growth of facial and pubic hair. The larger larynx is what causes men to have deeper voices than women.
Although both the male and female sexes have it, Adam’s apple is considered a characteristic feature of adult men, because its size tends to increase considerably during puberty. Its development is considered a secondary sexual characteristic of males, which appears as a result of hormonal activity. Its level of development varies between individuals and the widening of that area in the larynx can occur very suddenly and quickly.
When the larynx grows larger during puberty, it sticks out at the front of the throat. This is what’s called an Adam’s apple. Everyone’s larynx grows during puberty, but a girl’s larynx doesn’t grow as much as a boy’s does. That’s why boys have Adam’s apples.
It is named after the Biblical story of Adam eating forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, the protrusion does resemble a small apple under the skin that bobs up and down while a person drinks. Hoarseness, pain or swelling in the area of the neck near the Adam’s apple could signify anything from a cyst or polyp of the vocal chords to cancer of the thyroid or larynx cancer. Sometimes a very subtle uncomfortable feeling like pain occurs near Adams apple. It is not like a sore throat at all. It is hard to describe how it feels but it is just a slight pain. It does not hurt when touched by fingers and there are no bumps. For some males the pain comes and goes and for some it just stops after sometime without any medication. The pain is felt mostly when you are swallowing food. Some men get a pain or pressure around their Adams apple. For a while it hurt quite bad and gives a sore throat but not a typical burning sensation sore throat but more of a throbbing pain deeper than the typical sore throat. This is not a serious ailment but you should consult your doctor if this pain does not go away soon on its own.
