How To Increase Hemoglobin Levels



Hemoglobin is a protein molecule in red blood cell which carries blood from the lungs to the body’s tissues and returns the carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs.  Hemoglobin is generally measured from a blood sample as a complete blood count CBC. The normal Hemoglobin level depends on the age, gender, in newborns and adolescence. A blood test will tell you how much level of hemoglobin is in your blood. The normal range of Hemoglobin level in men is 13.5 to 17.5 per grams per deciliter and for women it is 12.0 to 15.5 grams per deciliter.

Causes for Low Hemoglobin
If your Hemoglobin level is below normal you have anemia. The causes of anemia may be due to Iron, Vitamin B12 and Folate deficiency. Excess blood loss due to injury, surgery, stomach ulcers, bleeding and cancer is also the reason of low level Hemoglobin. Kidney failure, Liver disease and Thalassemia which is a genetic disorder causes low levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells.
How to Increase Hemoglobin
It is always advisable to increase Hemoglobin naturally. There are several minerals and vitamins that can increase hemoglobin levels. The most important ones are iron, vitamin B6, B9 (folic acid), B12 and vitamin C which is very important for the absorption of enhancing of iron.
Iron Rich Foods: Green leafy vegetables like artichoke and spinach, whole egg, legumes like beans and lentils, almonds, meat and seafood are a rich source of iron.
Folic Acid: Dried beans, peas, green leafy vegetables like asparagus, turnip and spinach, pumpkins, beetroots and especially citrus fruits help to increase Hemoglobin levels.
Vitamin B12: Fish, Beef, Meat, poultry, eggs, milk and other dairy products are rich in vitamin B12.
Vitamin C: Citrus fruits like Oranges, Grape fruit and their juices, green and red pepper, Kiwi fruit, broccoli, strawberries, baked potatoes, tomatoes and cantaloupe are helpful in increasing Hemoglobin.
Herbs: Certain herbs can increase your Hemoglobin content by helping your body in absorbing iron better. Herbs like Withania, Nettle Leaf, Angelica, Parsley increases Hemoglobin content in the body.
Foods to Avoid
Adding certain foods to your diet increase your hemoglobin content but some foods like calcium in milk, cheese, high fiber foods, alcohol, beverages like coffee and tea should be taken in small quantities because these prevent the absorption of iron. Gluten foods like pasta, bread and wheat products also cause anemia.
